An outstanding scientist, a great patriot of Motherland, teacher and philosopher, the great humanist Mykola Ivanovych Pyrogov came to Odesa in October, 1856 and developed great activity there. Already on October, 30, 1856 he sent to the Ryshelievskiy Lyceum the query touching different stages of educational and scientific activity. In January, 1857 M. I. Pyrogov presented to the Minister of Education a memorandum “About the educational process in the Novorosyisk region and of clamant necessity of transformation of educational establishments”. The basic sense of the message was the necessity of transformation of the Odesa Lyceum into the University. M. I. Pyrogov widely used medical properties of the Odesa estuaries in the medical practice. His reformative activity did not reply to the view of reactionary administration of the region. It was the reason of decree from July, 18 of 1858 about his transportation to Kyiv to obtain the place of trustee of the Kyiv educational district.
